redemption from poverty and exclusiveness, increasing the scope of employment,
understanding on a range of issues, and awareness of one’s basic rights and
responsibilities. Shantinikethana
Grameena Abhivruddhi Samsthe came into being in 2014 with its flagship
programme Mission Education and has since been working with the objective of
empowering underprivileged communities by providing education, nutrition and
healthcare support to children. Education is the basic right of every child irrespective of
the differences in race, colour, gender, language, religion, caste, wealth,
birth status or physical and mental ability. Right to Education, Learning, and
Development (emotional, physical and mental) are fundamental human rights of
all children below the age of 18 years as per the United Nations Conventions on
the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). But millions of
children are deprived of these basic rights for several reasons including
conflict, natural calamities, ethnicity, disability, and above all poverty.
Smile Foundation was established with the prime intention of helping
children overcome these barriers and the prevailing inequity in society.
Realizing the
need to make education a fundamental right, an amendment was made to the
Indian Constitution more than five decades after it came into being. The Right
to Education (RTE) Act which came into force in 2014 made education free and
compulsory for all children in the age group of 6-14 years. But even more than
a decade after the implementation of the law, for many children in the country,
the learning curve has not been steady.
The socio-economic conditions of parents and the lack of proper learning in schools are hindrances which prevent many children
from having an education. Smile Foundation through its Mission Education
programme is committed to bringing a change in the lives of these children.
development in education, health, advocacy & awareness, and human
rights, in all programs the focus has been on the poor, needy, and marginalized
sections of societies, especially women, children, and tribal.
